Commemoration of the centenary of John Burns' resignation

Ahead of the declaration of war, John Burns, newly promoted to be Pre­s­ident of the Board of Trade in the gov­ern­ment, resigned from it saying he would have “nothing to do with such a crimin­al folly, the eff­ects of which will be app­all­ing to the wel­ter of nations who will be in­vol­ved."

Anniversary of First World War

No Glory will be holding an event in Parliament Square to mark the anniversary. Unlike the government backed events, it will be saying that there is no glory in war, and calling for a future based on peace. Please attend or hold your own local events to send a message that we do not want the sacrifice of so many used to defend present and future wars.

Silent candlelit vigil

To be held at the Clarkson Memorial in Wisbech to mark the centenary of WW1. A warm invitation is extended to everybody to come and bring their lantern. The vigil will begin at 8.00pm and will end at 9.00 when all the lights bar one (the peace lantern) will be extinguished. It is hoped to have a bring and share meal at the Friends Meeting House, North Brink, Wisbech commencing at 7.00pm. We will then walk as a body to the Clarkson memorial (five minutes away). This event is sponsored by Pax Christi Wisbech, Kings Lynn and Wisbech Stop the War, Wisbech Friends, Wisbech Peace Forum.

Anti-war meeting re-enactment

Haringey First World War Peace Forum will stage a re-enactment outside the Salisbury Pub in Green Lanes of an actual anti-war meeting that took place on the same spot 100 years ago.
Speakers will include a conscientious objector, a suffragette and a vicar. They will be dressed in period costumes and will describe the situation 100 years ago and then draw parallels with world events today.

Should Britain Go To War With Germany?

On August 2nd, Bristol Dockers' Union held a mass meeting on the dockside to debate whether Britain should go to war. They voted unanimously against war. This was one of many anti-war meetings and demonstrations across the country. Remembering The Real World War 1 will be re-staging the Bristol dockers' debate on Narrow Quay, near the Arnolfini.

WW1 Centenary event

WILPF, the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom, are staging a reconstruction of the protest that women made at the Kingsway Hall, London against the declaration of war on 4th August 1914. We will have banners depicting 4 of the women who made that protest, many of whom went on to become founders of WILPF the following year. The reconstruction will take place opposite Holborn Tube Station (close to where the Kingway hall used to be). WILPF welcomes your support.
