LONDON. Inequality and its Social
Impact with
Richard Wilkinson. There is compelling new evidence that large income inequalities within societies damage
the social fabric and quality of life for everyone, and that inequality has
an enormous impact on health. This raises fundamental questions about
social and economic policies pursued by governments around the world.
Richard Wilkinson is a leading epidemiologist and his recent book 'The Spirit
Level' has received widespread acclaim . He is on the steering group of
the Equality Trust, an Emeritus Professor at Nottingham
University and an Honorary
Professor at University
College. He will talk
about the evidence on the impact of inequality and the implications for
social and economic policy makers. Friends of Le Monde Diplomatique Café

GRASSINGTON. Grassington & District Peace Group AGM at 7.30pm
in the Methodist Church Room, Chapel
St., Grassington. Usual AGM business then the
main attraction: A Journey through the Ancient Kingdom of Zanskar”with Mike Stephenson. High in the
Himalaya in northern India,
the villages of Zanskar are some of the most
remote communities on earth. In winter their isolation is almost total, the
only way to get from one village to another is a dangerous walk along the
frozen Zanskar river. Mike’s son
Ben’s research for his Geology PhD took him to Zanskar,
living and working in the area, summer and winter. He launched a project to
bring skis to the region and teach the villagers how to use them so that
they could travel more freely and safely in winter. He acquired working
skis from all over the world and set up a ski school for the villagers of Zanskar. Mike’s journey to Zanskar
to see the ski school in action is the subject of his talk.

LONDON. Spiritual responses to global
crisis. A five week series of reflective workshops. All at 6.30 - 9.15pm.
Prayer and hope. How often do we have the experience of watching the news
and feeling despair or hopelessness? Within our own individual lives we
know from experience that crises can herald change and transformation. How
can we engage our spirituality to look for the hope within the despair, and
to inhabit more fully our prayers for others and for humanity.

LONDON. What price Democracy? The
hidden forces behind the Honduran coup with Dr Francisco Dominguez. In
June last year, Manuel Zelaya, the democratically
elected President of Honduras, was kidnapped in a military coup, and flown
to Costa Rica.
Honduras has long been an
ally of the US,
which is its chief trading partner, and maintains a military base in the
country. However, during his presidency, Zelaya
had moved sharply to the left, and there was a strong perception that he
was becoming allied to the radical forces in Latin
America. Following the coup, in complete contradiction to its
avowed defence of democracy, the US took very timid and
insubstantial steps against his abductors, and the future remains
uncertain. Francisco Dominguez is the Head of the Centre for Brazilian
and Latin American Studies at Middlesex
University, and has
broadcast and published extensively on issues within the region. He will
discuss the current situation within Honduras, and its implications
for the global political order. Friends of Le Monde Diplomatique Café Diplo

LONDON. Creating
Safe Space. Safe space is a fundamental requirement for authentic and
meaningful dialogue in diverse groups. This is particularly important when
the focus is on conflict and reconciliation, or the theme is a sensitive
one such as faith and belief. The perceived safety of an environment will
have a direct impact on the ease with which relationships are formed and
their sustainability. This workshop will explore a wide range of practical
methods for creating safe space in different contexts. These include:
opening dialogues and meetings effectively; attending to boundaries;
keeping engagement voluntary; being aware of the impact of the facilitator;
authenticity; aftercare; and more. With Justine Huxley (St
Ethelburga's Centre). 10am-5pm £40 (£20

LONDON. Seminar: Militarism, Masculinity and Men with Cynthia Cockburn.
Most of us have a hunch that militarism is connected in some way to
masculinity. But to raise the matter seems to bring us perilously close to
suggesting that, in matters of violence and war, women have clean hands.
What can reasonably be thought and said about this difficult issue? Even
more to the point, what can be done? 1pm. Amnesty International Action

decent services, and against forcible eviction. Producer and director,
Jenny Morgan grew up in Durban
and has made numerous films for TV about social injustice. In the
discussion following the film, she will be joined by Firoze
Manji, the executive director and editor of Pambazuka News, the innovative online newsletter which

speaker: Sir Richard Jolly (former under-Secretary General for United
Nations). Meeting from 6.30-8.30pm, at Friends House, Euston Road, London NW1 2BJ. Progress towards the MDGs is slipping away according to the Millennium

strategies and solutions for the successful outcome of the MDGs for the benefit of the poorest people of the
world. For registration please contact: Vijay Mehta (vijay@vmpeace.org) Advance bookings

AMMERDOWN.
Workshop: Living life authentically requires looking closely at our values
and examining how we live them out. Then we can recognise damaging
behaviour, thought and communication patterns, and begin to learn and
practice new ways of interacting - using compassion and nonviolence to
transform relationships of oppression and violence. Participants of this
weekend workshop will have space to reflect on and share what living
authentically means for you/us and explore how living authentically can be
a force of positive social change. We will work in a participatory, organic
way. The methods include everything from whole/small group discussions,
games, drama, drawing, quiet reflection time, video and much more. Join
Turning the Tide and St
Ethelburgas Centre for Reconciliation and Peace for this weekend
workshop at the lovely Ammerdown Centre. For bookings contact the Ammerdown
